i am learing how to knit and don't understand what is meant by gauge and some of the knitting patterns.?

gauge is the number of stitches per inch. while needle size does make in impact, it also depends on how you knit (more loosely or tighter) and the type of yarn your using. You might want to check out this website http://knitting.about.com/library/weekly/aa042097.htm
