You need to get a pattern, the pattern will give you the weight of the yarn and the needle size.
You need to start by judging your gage.
So many stitches per inch.
I knit big compared to the normal gages.
A twin size blanket ends up being king size.
Look for pattern and go from there. I recommend you do not use wool, it shrinks.
